"I hunt deer because I love the entire process, the preparation, the excitement, and sustained suspense of trying to match my woods-lore against the finely honed instincts of these creatures."

Traditional Bows: TUNING A TRADITIONAL BOW

Traditional Bows

You Can Get the Optimum Performance from Your Bow too!

By Chuck Smick

A traditional bow needs to be “tuned” for optimum performance; just like a compound bow. A traditional archer/bowhunter that is just starting in the sport, using a “real bow” (no training wheels) should contact an experienced traditional archer; or archery shop that has a representative that is experienced with traditional bows and arrows. You can accomplish this by contacting your state’s bowhunting organization or the Professional Bowhunters Society. NOTE: You can view the United Bowhunters of Kentucky website at www.unitedbowhuntersofkentucky.org., and The Professional Bowhunters Society can be reached at www.bowsite2.com//pbs.

Traditional Bows: Hunting shafts for recurve

Traditional Bows
Hello:

I am currently using a 28" draw Martin Hunter recurve bow @ 55# for hunting Australian game from large Rusa Deer to Feral Pigs to Goats etc, and with consideration to momentum requirements to take large game (min) 650grns shaft composition), I am curious as to what arrows I should be shafting large game animals with. I shoot the recurve instinctive style, bare-bow with finger release, using a mixture of mostly 175 grain Davies Aztec broadheads and some 160 grain Davies Delta broadheads, fitted with 11/32" adapters at 32 grains and satellite RPS inserts, with a uni-bushing nock system with 5" feathers
on 29" 2117 alloy arrow shafts (similar to XX75 gamegetters). I mostly hunt feral boars with thick shoulder pads that are in excess of 100kgs (220pounds), and have taken a large number to date, but am curious as to which of the suggested arrow shaft sizes, of 2216 and 2117, I should use (suggested by Easton legacy hunting shaft selector). The 2117s I have been using have a spine of 0.400, and the suggested 2216s have a spine of 0.375, and I am wondering whether I should use the softer or harder spined shafts to best effect in hunting (some 3D target shooting done also, using 125grn points on same system). The total weight in grains of the arrow (348grns @ 29"), broadhead (175grns) and adapter 32grns)is 555 grains for the 29" shaft, but I don't know the weights of the RPS inserts, the uni-bushing system (bushing and nock) and feathers (feather weight unnecessary?).

Traditional Bows: Longbows, Llamas and Lady Luck

Traditional Bows
Our elk adventure began at the southern Colorado trailhead the afternoon of Saturday, September 20, 2003. Friends, David Hanson and Jeff Davis had spent almost two weeks in the mountains fighting bad weather, but had seen plenty of animals. After two years in a row, I just couldn’t get away this year. Their initial trip ended with no shots, but in chatting with David Thursday, September 18th; I could tell he wanted to go back. I looked at my calendar and thought, “Hmm, next week looks clear. We got the okay from our wives, bosses and started packing. This hunt week coincided with the final archery-only week, as the muzzleloader season ended that Sunday.
